The primary medieval structure in Ponferrada, Spain, is the Castillo de los Templarios (Templar Castle), a MASSIVE 12th-century fortress covering approximately 16,000 square meters. Situated on the Camino de Santiago, it was built by the Knights Templar to protect pilgrims, featuring a drawbridge, crenellated (battlement) towers, and, originally, twelve towers arranged to mirror constellations.

Establishment: Originally a Roman citadel, it was entrusted to the Knights Templar in 1178 by King Ferdinand II of León to safeguard pilgrims.

The Templars expanded the castle into one of the largest strongholds in northwestern Spain before they were disbanded in the early 14th century.
