The Portico of Glory (Pórtico da Gloria) is the great sculpted entrance inside the western end of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, and for many pilgrims it is the artistic and spiritual climax of the Camino de Santiago. Created by the master sculptor and architect Master Mateo between about 1168 and 1211, it is widely regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces of Romanesque art in Europe.
I’ll be posting more from Santiago de Compostela, Amenal, Arzua, my continuing work on the infrastructure of the Camino, as well as what I’ve learned about the Camino, pilgrimage, and death.
